A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, was reportedly caught in act while trying to snatch electoral materials at a polling unit in Oredo LGA, Edo state early this morning.
He was fiercely resisted by voters and some PDP supporters at the unit.
Normalcy has since returned and voting commenced in the highly anticipated election.
Also today, the PDP, raised the alarm over a “siege” at a hotel Nyesom Wike, Rivers Governor, is in Benin, capital of Edo state.
Wike, who is the chairman of the PDP national campaign council for the Edo governorship election, is currently in the state.
In a statement, Akawor Desmond, chairman of Rivers PDP, said Abdullahi Ganduje, governor of Kano, and Hope Uzodinma, his Imo counterpart, are moving freely while Wike has been prevented from going out.
Ganduje and Uzodinma are of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
“The attention of the entire People of Rivers State has been drawn to the siege laid at the Hotel where the Governor of Rivers State Nyesom Wike is lodging while on official assignment in Benin, Edo State,” the statement read.
“Recall that Governor Wike was appointed Chairman of the PDP National Campaign Council for the Edo Governorship election; this is same position Governor Ganduje of Kano State occupies for his party the APC.
“Governor Ganduje and Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State are all in Benin, Edo State carrying out their assignment for the APC without any molestation or intimidation.
“And in a breach of the pledge they made security agencies have decided to harass and intimidate Governor Wike who has not done any wrong.
“May I on behalf of entire Rivers People Warn that we Shall hold the IGP responsible for anything that happens to our Governor.”
When contacted, Chidi Nwafor, police public relations officer in Rivers, said he did not have information on the issue.
Uche Secondus, national chairman of the PDP, also alleged that security operatives are hindering the movement of governors of the opposition party.
Recall that Wike had on Friday said if security agents are able to curb political thugs from playing a role in the Edo governorship election, the APC will be “beaten silly.”
He added that the only hope APC has on winning the election is to “manipulate the process.”
The governor said despite the assurances of Mohammed Adamu, inspector-general of police (IGP), the electorate in Edo should be vigilant of any malpractice.
He urged the Edo people to be peaceful and protect the electoral process.
“The IG has said they will not give room to any thugs, to any miscreants, and it is our prayer that is done. If that is done, APC will be beaten silly in this election. If what IG said is carried out, you will see that APC will not near – the only hope they have is to manipulate the security agencies,” Wike said.
“Remember what happened in my case and if you take the case of Rivers state, it was very clear, and the way I see APC going, the desperation is so much and the only hope APC has today is to use security agents, is to manipulate the process.
“Our own business is to let our people know, if you know the police are [compromised], we will not allow it. We want to believe in them but however, don’t slip, don’t slip, make sure you follow them bumper to bumper.
“Make sure you monitor what is happening. Let one policeman tell you that after they have declared results in this unit, that you cannot as an agent, follow that result to the collation centre. That is not correct.
“In some cases, you see security agents coming to even beat the agents of the opposition party. It is not something that anyone will come and tell me that you have assured me that nothing will happen.”
The Rivers governor said Godwin Obaseki, governor of Edo, has performed well in delivering good governance.
“Everybody knows, go to Edo, they don’t do publicity. They do their thing quietly. It may be different from ours,” he said.
