The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, and a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Desmond Elliot, were trending topics on social media at different times during the week. Fashola ‘trended’ on Sunday and Monday, while Desmond started ‘trending’ on Thursday.
Elliot was criticised by many celebrities and youths because of his comments on regulating social media while in the Assembly chambers. Though he initially denied making such comments, the video was released online and the actor-cum-politician was thoroughly bashed on the Internet. The 46-year-old later apologised over his comments on Friday, October 30. He wrote on Twitter, “I did not mean to be insensitive with this. It was borne out of the magnitude of destruction and looting of businesses I witnessed when I went on a tour of my constituency.
“I saw women crying and my constituent members distraught as a result of the damages inflicted on their source of livelihood. I was moved by this while giving my submission on the floor of the House. I allowed my emotions to get the better of me and for this, I apologise to everyone my earlier statements may have hurt.”
Before Elliot’s apology, top singer, Davido, had said the actor already spoilt the childhood memories he had of him. He tweeted, “Desmond Elliot just destroyed all the precious childhood memories he gave us in movies.”
One of Davido’s followers, Chinyere Hope, then commented on the earlier tweet. “You all are insulting Nkem Owoh, Sam Loco, Mr Ibu and Pete Edochie who gave us ‘childhood memories’. Desmond Eliot was a terrible actor…”
Samklef wrote, “Desmond ‘Idiot’ referred to us as children. And he said it with passion. Once they put on ‘agbada’ and cap, their brains would just ‘clout’. How old is he for him to call us children?”
Treazy Blaq added, “What do you expect from someone who commissioned a toilet? Desmond Elliot, you are a sell-out.”
Tekno simply wrote, “Desmond ‘Idiot’.”
“Desmond Elliot though…can’t trust anyone in politics. Kai e fall my hand (I am disappointed),” added Skales.
Meanwhile, Fashola became a subject of public discourse when he found a camera at the Lekki tollgate venue of the #EndSARS protest shootings, while on a visit to vandalised properties in company with governors and ministers from the South-West. Many celebrities and youths dismissed Fashola’s findings as staged, wondering how he could find a camera in such a conspicuous place after several security operatives and sanitation crew had combed the place.
Several entertainers criticised the former Lagos State governor. Falz wrote, “Secret camera, you know. Must really think we are stupid! What kind of embarrassment is this? Like, do these men actually think we are daft?”
Ice Prince added, “Somebody please tell me the Minister, Fashola, and his guys running into a random camcorder at Lekki tollgate yesterday was a joke. Please, I’m begging anyone. Just say it’s a joke. Thought LAWMA just cleaned the place and Governor Sanwo-Olu already did a tour.”
Peter, of defunct P-Square fame, wrote,“These people really think we are daft and fools. And those are people’s parents. What a shame and embarrassment. Look at where the lens of the camcorder is facing.”
Other celebs that made comedy videos about the incident include Ayo Makun, Nedu Wazobia and Alex Unusual.
