Sierra Leone vs Nigeria: Kanu reveals why Super Eagles played 0-0 in Freetown

Former Super Eagles striker, Nwankwo Kanu has insisted that Nigeria played a 0-0 draw against Sierra Leone in the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier tie on Tuesday in Freetown because Gernot Rohr’s side played with caution to avoid a repeat of what happened in Benin City, Edo State.

Kanu, a former Arsenal striker, also expressed confidence that Nigeria will eventually qualify for the 2022 AFCON in Cameroon.

The Super Eagles kept their qualification for the 2022 AFCON on ice after failing to beat Sierra Leone in both games.

Rohr’s men surrendered a four-goal lead to draw 4-4 draw in the first leg encounter at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin last Friday.

“Going by the game [on Tuesday], the Super Eagles didn’t concede any goal, and to me, that’s a sign of improvement,” Kanu told Goal.

“To me, that is not a bad result when compared with what happened in Nigeria. They should have won in Freetown, but as we all saw, their pitch was bad, and I’m sure our players were playing with caution to avoid a repeat of what happened in Benin City.

“The fact remains that we have to qualify for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, and I believe that the boys will get the job done.”
